CHRONIC PAIN
DR. JORDI JIMÉNEZ
Acute pain is the body's warning sign of injury or illness. However, chronic pain persists beyond normal healing times, often for months or even years. This condition can significantly affect quality of life, limiting mobility, mood, and the ability to perform daily activities. At our trauma clinic, we approach chronic pain with a multidisciplinary approach to offer relief and improve your well-being.
What is Chronic Pain?
Chronic pain isn't simply a long-term symptom; it often becomes a condition in itself. It can originate from an initial injury, but it can also develop due to degenerative diseases, nerve problems, or even without a clear identifiable cause. Some of the conditions that cause chronic pain include:
- Advanced osteoarthritis: Continued wear and tear of joint cartilage can lead to persistent pain.
- Chronic lower back pain: A complex problem with multiple possible causes, from disc problems to degeneration of the vertebral joints.
- Fibromyalgia: A disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood problems .
- Neuropathic pain: Resulting from damage or dysfunction of the nervous system, which may manifest as burning, tingling, or an electric shock sensation.
- Chronic post-surgical pain: Pain that persists after surgery.
Our Approach to Chronic Pain Treatment
We understand the complexity of chronic pain and the importance of a comprehensive approach. Our team of trauma specialists collaborates with other specialists (physical therapists, psychologists, occupational therapists) to recommend a personalized treatment plan that may include:
- Comprehensive diagnosis: Identification of the underlying cause of the pain through medical history, physical examination, and imaging or nerve tests.
- Pharmacological treatment: Use of analgesics, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants or specific medications for neuropathic pain.
- Interventional therapies: Joint injections, nerve blocks, rhizotomies , or other techniques to relieve pain directly at its source.
- Physical therapy and rehabilitation: Therapeutic exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and function.
- Occupational Therapy: Strategies to adapt daily activities and improve independence.
- Psychological support: Pain management techniques, stress reduction, and mood improvement.
