CERVICAL PAIN
DR. JORDI JIMÉNEZ
Cervical pain , or neck pain, is a common ailment that can affect people of all ages. It can range from a level of stiffness to sharp, disabling pain, often accompanied by limited head movement. In our trauma department, we approach neck pain holistically to identify its cause and recommend the most effective solutions.
What can cause neck pain?
The causes of neck pain are diverse and include:
- Muscle tension: Incorrect posture (especially when using electronic devices), stress, sudden or sustained movements.
- Injuries: Whiplash after traffic accidents, falls or sports injuries.
- Cervical osteoarthritis: Wear and tear of the joints and discs in the neck over time.
- Cervical disc herniation: When the jelly-like material of an intervertebral disc presses on a nerve.
- Cervical stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck, which may compress the spinal cord or nerve roots.
- Postural factors: Spending a lot of time with your head forward (for example, when using a mobile phone or computer).
What symptoms can accompany neck pain?
In addition to the pain itself, you may experience:
- Stiffness and difficulty turning the head.
- Pain that radiates to the shoulders, arms or even the hands.
- Tingling or weakness in arms and hands.
- Headache.
- Dizziness.
Our Approach to Cervical Pain Treatment:
In traumatology, our goal is to relieve your pain and restore normal neck function. Treatment may include:
- Conservative measures: Relative rest, application of heat or cold, physical therapy (strengthening and stretching exercises), analgesics and anti-inflammatories.
- Injections: In some cases, guided or unguided injections of medications (such as corticosteroids or local anesthetics) can be performed to reduce deterioration and pain. Ultrasound-guided interventions may be useful in certain cases for greater precision.
- Surgical treatment: In specific situations, such as severe disc herniations with neurological compromise or symptomatic cervical stenosis that do not respond to conservative treatment, surgery may be considered.
If you suffer from neck pain, we encourage you to seek an evaluation to determine the cause of your symptoms and receive the most appropriate treatment for you.
