FRACTURES

FRACTURES
DR. JORDI JIMÉNEZ

A fracture is a complete or partial break in a bone. It can occur due to a variety of causes, from direct trauma (a fall, a blow) to repetitive stress or diseases that weaken bones. In traumatology, fracture management is a key area of focus.

What types of fractures exist?

Fractures are classified in many ways, depending on their location, the pattern of the break, and whether the skin is intact (closed) or broken (open or exposed). Some common categories include:

  • Closed fractures: The skin surrounding the fractured bone is intact.
  • Open (exposed) fractures: The broken bone breaks the skin, which increases the risk of infection.
  • Complete fractures: The bone breaks into two or more separate fragments.
  • Incomplete fractures: The bone does not break completely.
  • Displaced fractures: The fragments of the broken bone are not aligned correctly.
  • Non-displaced fractures: The fragments of the broken bone maintain their normal alignment.

What are the symptoms of a fracture?

Symptoms may vary depending on the bone involved and the severity of the fracture, but include:

  • Severe pain, which worsens with movement.
  • Visible deformity of the limb.
  • Swelling.
  • Hematoma (bruise).
  • Inability to move or bear weight on the affected area.

How are fractures treated?

Fracture treatment aims to realign the bone fragments (reduction) and hold them in that position until the bone heals. Treatment options may include:

  • Immobilization: With casts, splints or bandages.
  • Closed reduction: Manipulation of the bone to realign it without surgery.
  • Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF): Surgery to realign bones, using plates, screws, pins, or wires to hold them in place.
  • External fixation: A frame external to the body connected to the bones with nails or screws.

If you suspect a fracture may be in need of treatment, it's crucial to seek medical advice for proper diagnosis and treatment. In our trauma clinic, we are equipped to evaluate and treat all types of fractures, ensuring the best possible recovery for each patient.
