Common Types of Sports Injuries

Sports injuries can vary significantly depending on the sport, intensity, and technique. Some of the most common include:

  • Sprains and strains: Injuries to ligaments (sprains) and muscles or tendons (strains), common in ankles, knees, wrists, and other joints.
  • Stress fractures: Small cracks in the bones caused by repetitive overload, common in runners and high-impact athletes.
  • Muscle injuries: Muscle tears, contractures or bruises, common in contact sports and racing.
  • Tendon injuries: Tendinitis (inflammation) and tendinosis (degeneration) affecting tendons such as the Achilles, patellar, and rotator cuff tendons.
  • Knee injuries: Meniscus, cruciate ligament (ACL, PCL) and lateral ligament (LLI, LLL) tears, common in pivot and contact sports.
  • Shoulder injuries: Instability, subacromial impingement, and rotator cuff injuries, common in throwing and overhead sports.
