Suprascapular nerve block

Suprascapular nerve block

A suprascapular nerve block is a medical procedure in which a local anesthetic injection is administered near the suprascapular nerve to relieve acute and chronic shoulder pain. The suprascapular nerve originates in the neck and extends to the shoulder. It enters the back of the scapula and is accessible in the fossa of the same name. The suprascapular nerve provides sensation to the shoulder on its posterior and superior surface and is responsible for controlling some of the muscles that move the shoulder joint.

The local anesthetic injection temporarily blocks pain signals transmitted along the nerve, providing immediate relief. Although the block is temporary, several physiological mechanisms explain the block's longevity once the anesthetic has worn off.

Some common indications for a suprascapular nerve block include:

  • Chronic shoulder pain: A suprascapular nerve block is often used to treat chronic shoulder pain that does not respond to other treatments, such as physical therapy, pain relievers, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Nonsurgical rotator cuff injuries: A suprascapular nerve block may be a treatment option for patients with rotator cuff injuries who do not have a surgical indication or who, due to age or high surgical risk, cannot undergo surgery.
  • Arthritis: A suprascapular nerve block may be helpful in relieving pain associated with shoulder arthritis.
  • Bursitis: Shoulder bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa that protects the shoulder tendons. A suprascapular nerve block may help relieve the pain and inflammation associated with this condition. Suprascapular neuralgia: Suprascapular neuralgia is a painful disorder that occurs when the suprascapular nerve is compressed or injured.

The introduction of ultrasound guidance gives this technique direct vision, precision, and safety, minimizing the complications associated with blind surgery.

In general, suprascapular nerve block can be an excellent treatment option.
