What is Morton's neuroma?

A Morton's neuroma is a benign tumor that develops between the metatarsal bones of the foot. Symptoms include pain, numbness, tingling, and a feeling of numbness in the affected toe or toes, as well as foot pain when walking or wearing tight shoes.

What causes Morton's neuroma?

The exact causes of Morton's neuroma are not fully understood, but it is believed they may be related to several factors, including:

  • Previous foot injuries
  • Foot deformities, such as high arches or flat feet
  • Overweight or obesity
  • Tight footwear or high heels
  • Physical activity or sports that place weight on the feet, such as dance or athletics
  • Foot problems, such as tarsal tunnel syndrome or adductor metatarsus longus
  • Diseases such as restless legs syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

Some of these factors can increase pressure on the nerve and cause inflammation and abnormal growth of nerve tissue.

How is Morton's neuroma diagnosed?

The diagnosis of Morton's neuroma is based on the patient's medical history and symptoms, as well as a physical examination and additional testing, such as an MRI or ultrasound.

How is Morton's neuroma treated?

Treatment for Morton's neuroma may include several options, such as:

  • Footwear changes: Wearing shoes with thick, wide soles to reduce pressure on the affected area.
  • Orthoses: Using an insole or support device to reduce pressure on the affected area.
  • Physiotherapy: Exercises to strengthen the foot muscles and improve flexibility and mobility.
  • Ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections: These can be administered to reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Surgery: If the above treatments are not effective, surgery to remove the neuroma may be considered.

It is important to note that the most appropriate treatment will depend on the severity of the condition and the individual needs of each patient.
