Postural hygiene in schoolchildren

Postural hygiene in schoolchildren

  • 18/10/2015

This is a frequent reason for consultation due to the increase in back pain and spinal pathologies among schoolchildren, a source of great concern for parents, teachers, and students seeking advice on this type of problem.

Most school activities will be carried out in a sitting position, at their desk or work table, so this posture is very important. Poor postures cause fatigue. In general, we can apply all the measures explained in the pain prevention section.

We will try to schedule school activities to combine sitting with games and activities that require physical activity. The same applies to homeschooling.

For carrying school supplies:

  • carry only the essentials for that day.
  • A stroller is preferred (it's better to push it than to drag it), or a backpack placed centrally on both shoulders. If it's a satchel or shoulder bag, carry it across the body, not on one shoulder.

While the student is seated:

  • The appropriate height of the study desk should be at the child's chest.
  • They should avoid repeated and forced twists of the spine and should sit properly with their feet flat on the floor, hips and knees at a 90-degree angle. If their feet don't reach the floor, it's advisable to rest them on a footrest.
  • Rest your back against the back of the chair.
